House plans are where it all begins for clients looking to develop their property or build a new dwelling. This stage is usually one of least stressful parts of the experience due to the fact that the plans are predominantly produced prior to any work being undertaken.
A set of house plans consists of many different drawings these include The location plan, site or block plan, existing and proposed conditions, existing and proposed service locations and details and robust construction methodology. In the modern era most house plans are drawn up on computer packages such as AutoCAD, Revit or one of the many other CAD programs available, some designer still work with drawing boards, this process consists of drawing the plans and details onto transparent paper such as tracing paper from many other sheets of paper with the detail previously drawn on, this can be a tedious and difficult process but the final product can look fantastic as it adds a slice of artistic flair to the plans. Whether either above method is used the plans and details on house plans are to be drawn the correct scale, in the computer programs you input the dimensions as they are in real terms and scale the drawings in the paperspace environment to what ever scale is required, for location plans this is usually 1:1250, the site or block plans are 1:500, floor plans and elevations are 1:50 or 1:100 whilst the robust details are shown in either 1:10 or 1:20. Spot levels are also sometimes shown on the site drawings to show the way that the land lies, this could make a huge difference to the design so can be a very important factor.

The basic description of a floor plan within the house/building plan genre is a drawing of a floor that is viewed as if the reader was looking down from above, is is actually technically supposed to be a horizontal section through the building or house through the middle of the windows on that level or floor.
Some information shown on floor plans are wall construction, room use, door and window locations, fire place location, kitchen and bathroom layouts, and floor levels and finishes. It is also important to use dimensions, especially around important areas as the reader may not always have a scale rule handy.
The basic description of an elevation within the house/building plan genre is a drawings of a the facades of the house that is viewed as if the reader was looking directly at the building from a standing position.
Some information shown on the elevation plans are wall construction, roof construction, door and window locations and opening bias, ground level, dpc level, and wall finishes.
The basic description of a section within the house/building plan genre is a drawing that combines the information, the views of a section are similar to that of an elevation but they show a “cut through” the building to reveal the construction methods used. Action is to identified on the floor plans with the use of section arrows, these highlight the exact location the “cut though” was taken from so the reader can identify the correct section for the correct location. Some information shown on section plans are wall construction, room use, door and window locations, fire place location, kitchen and bathroom layouts, and floor levels and finishes.

It is very important when producing building plans to make them as detailed as is possible, the reason for this is that it makes it much easier for the construction workers to price accurately, thus saving any nasty shocks further down the line for the client.
